I began woodworking in 1995 after a 24 year career in the computer industry. It was an exciting time to be in computers as a programmer, analyst and sales manager, but there always seemed to be something missing. Discovering the scrollsaw was the catalyst to bringing my creative abilities to the surface.
Now it might seem like computers and scrollsaws are opposites on the creative spectrum, but if you look at the precise manner in which many of the pieces here are created, you can begin to see that the kind of art I create uses both sides of the brain. Over the past 16 years, the work has progressed from simple designs with few cutouts to the intricate crosses with over 100 cutouts, and the newest 3 dimensional boxes, bowls, flowers and miniatures. The most exciting thing for me is to master a new technique and discover new designs that can be made from beautiful wood.
Each piece is created one at a time using an RBI scrollsaw. Although there are many other power tools in my shop, the RBI gets the most use. The first step is to decide on the design, then choose the right wood for the design. I use only domestic and exotic hardwoods, which have wonderful grain and color. No dyes or stains are used. Only the wooden plates are painted. Some of these pieces need to be seen to appreciate the exquisite brilliant color and grain of the wood and how it is incorporated into the particular design.
